My Online News Diary: How Much News Do I Actually Read?

Media and news online is something everyone comes in daily contact with. Certain questions remains relevant, however. Do people take the time to look more deeply when they see an image of the story? Who would really want to know more than one headline, and even the first paragraph? Not me.

This might sound like blasphemy to an individual who is passionate about reading and writing and is a journalism major. I don't think anyone should be thinking that way.

This week, I looked at my consumption of world news. Never once did I depart from my routine. I was able to complete the rest of my day as normal.

But I also kept a note of the times I did look for news or read about it and the outcome was what I had imagined it would be from the beginning. Twitter was my primary source of information throughout the five days, just as it has always been.

I heard on The New York Times twitter just this morning about the way Boko Haram murdered more people in Nigeria and continuing the Flint scandal. Every news source have tweeted on the Democratic as well as Republican Presidential Races, Donald Trump and how Iowa is suddenly become relevant to the thoughts of Americans.

These are the things that all of us have been told about. Why do I not always keep in touch? Does it fall under my duty to since I'm interested in working in this area? Yes, it is. However, to honestly, I tend to be an ordinary consumer. I'll only go more deeply at what find fascinating.

I type ESPN.com onto my laptop many times throughout the day. A large part of my feed on Twitter are broadcasters and sports writers. Why? Because it's my aim to be a journalist in the field of sports. It's just normal.

I am able to accurately identify a variety of events that are happening in the world of sports, from injuries and games from games and statistics to even the most actual sporting stories from around the globe. This includes everything from Johnny Manziel's off-the field antics to Cam Newton's dribbling to Baylor University's ongoing controversy over not helping victims of sexual assault that happened to be an athlete. It's interesting for me, which is why I stay up to date with it, keep track of it, and even read about it. I'd like to know more about it.

It's not the most pleasant thing to admit that, but "real" news doesn't attract me nearly as much. I find it less exciting, and I often find it an effort to go through the 100th story on Donald Trump.

Of course, I love to stay up to date. However, for topics which I don't have any immediate interest in I'm probably not going to search for specifics. I'd be interested in reading it later when I have some time.

My information consumption is heavily influenced by in my personal interests. I've realized that especially this week as I was attentive to my reading habits. I was working at my bedroom late at night, and I thought to myself, "Wow, I haven't been able to catch up with today's Times the last few days."

I realized that it's not crossed my mind in the past that I hadn't kept close tabs on the top news outlets like my colleagues, journalists and students do. Perhaps I'll try to make a change.
